QuarkXPress 8 Fails to Launch Because Activation File Is Corrupted -- How to Create a New QuarkXPress 8 Activation File
KBA-01437-PXMKTX
Affects

QuarkXPress 8.x

Mac OS 10.4.x and 10.5.x

Summary

My activation file has become corrupted and I need to reactivate. When this happened in QuarkXPress 7, I could run the Components Installer from the For System folder to generate a new, blank activation file. In QuarkXPress 8, however, there is no For System folder in the QuarkXPress folder. How can I reactivate QuarkXPress 8 if my activation file becomes corrupted?

Solution

If your Activation File becomes corrupted, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the folder named 'Quark' located in Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences.
  2. Open the Get Info window. For this folder and set Ownership and Permissions to Read & Write for all groups and users.
Note: You will need System Administrator account privileges to change permissions on this folder and will be prompted to authenticate when you do so.
  3. Close the Get Info window.

Other Resources:
If this did not fix your problem, try these steps to create a new one:

  1. Delete the folder named 'Quark' that is located in Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences.
  2. Create a new folder named 'Quark' in the same location (Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences).
  3. Launch QuarkXPress 8. You will be prompted with a new Activation Screen.
  4. Activate your license of QuarkXPress normally.

Background:
In QuarkXPress 8 it is no longer necessary to run a Components Installer in order to create a new Activation file.
