Unable to Print to a PostScript Printer from QuarkXPress 7 or 8
KBA-01133-Y028BK
Affects

QuarkXPress 7.x and 8.x

Mac OS 10.4.x and 10.5.x

Summary

I cannot print to a PostScript printer from QuarkXPress 7 or 8, even though I can print to the same printer from other applications, including QuarkXPress 6.

Solution

Follow these steps to resolve the problem:

  1. Update the driver and the PPD of your printer to the most recent version.
  2. Download and install the CUPS Filter Update, which is available here:
    http://downloads.quark.com/Details.aspx?fid=117&&mid=1

If this solution doesn’t address your printing problem, there may be a different issue affecting your ability to print. If this is the case, try the following procedures:

  • Create a PostScript file and drag the PostScript file’s icon onto the printer's icon.
  • Launch the Printer Setup Utility ([drive]:Applications:Utilities), select the printer, and then click Show Info. Choose Printer Model from the first drop-down menu and Generic from the second drop-down menu. When you've finished setting up your Default Printer, try to print the layout again. If it fails to print successfully, follow the procedure above to install a new printer driver and PPD. Then download and install the CUPS filter.

    Note: In Mac OS X Leopard (10.5.x), the Printer Setup Utility has been incorporated into the System Preferences. This is the only place you can access it to set up the printer.

More Information:
QuarkXPress sends PostScript to the Common Unix Printing System (CUPS), a framework that is part of the operating system. There is a conflict with one of the conduits in the process chain, causing the job to never get passed to the printer. The CUPS Filter Update resolves the problem by fixing this process.
