The QuarkXPress 10 Hanging Characters feature lets you specify that particular characters should “hang” outside the margins of a paragraph, so that the characters at the beginning and ending of every line in the paragraph align perfectly with one another.

For example, you can create a hanging character class that contains hyphens, periods, commas, quotation marks, and apostrophes; specify when the characters should hang (at the beginning of the line, at the end of the line, or as a drop cap), and even control the amount of the hang (from 0% to 100%).

Then you can combine several hanging character classes into a hanging character set and apply that hanging character set to paragraphs or paragraph style sheets. You can use the presets included with QuarkXPress, or create your own. You can even share hanging character classes and sets within a workgroup.
