This is actually not a problem but can be caused by settings you have selected in the Proof Output menu options in QuarkXPress 7. This can occur if you choose View > Proof Output > Grayscale. This feature offers the option to view the document in CMYK, RGB, Grayscale, and other modes. When the Grayscale option is selected, all colors displayed will change to grayscale. The same thing will occur in the Colors palette, where all color swatches will display in grayscale.

  1. To view colors in color, choose another option from the View > Proof Output > Grayscale submenu.

  2. If the Colors palette still displays grayscale, try recreating your preferences. To do so:

  3. Quit QuarkXPress.

  4. Rename your current Preferences folder.

    • Mac OS: Navigate to Hard Drive:Users:[current user]:Library:Preferences:Quark and rename the 'QuarkXPress 7.0' folder to 'Old_QuarkXPress 7.0'.

      For 10.7.x & 10.8.x:

(On the Finder window, please press and hold the 'option' key (marked ALT) and on the menu bar, at the top, select Go to view the User Library)

    • Windows: Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[current user]\Application Data\Quark and rename the 'QuarkXPress 7.0' folder to 'Old_QuarkXPress 7.0'.

  5. Relaunch QuarkXPress. The 'QuarkXPress 7.0' (Preferences) folder will be regenerated.

  6. If the fix fails, delete the new 'QuarkXPress 7.0' folder and change the name of the old folder back to 'QuarkXPress 7.0'
