On some operating systems it is necessary to have an active PostScript printer installed in order to render a PDF in QuarkXPress Server.

Add a 'virtual' printer' so that QuarkXPress Server sees that a PostScript device is installed:

To install a virtual printer on Windows Vista:

  1. Choose Start > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Printers icon.
  3. Choose Add Printer icon from the File menu. The Add Printer Wizard window displays.
  4. Select Add a Local Printer option.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Select the option “Use existing port” and then choose FILE: (Print to File) from the drop-down menu.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select a PostScript printer such as the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Select the option “Use the driver that is currently installed (recommended)”.
  11. Click Next.
  12. The Type a Printer name screen displays.
  13. Enter a name for the printer and check the checkbox for Set as the default printer.
  14. Click Next.
  15. The Print Test Page screen displays.
  16. Ignore Print a test page and click Finish.

To Install a virtual printer on Windows 2000 and Windows XP:

  1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Printers and Faxes icon.
  3. Double-click the Add Printer icon. The Add Printer Wizard window displays.
  4. Click Next. The following message displays: 'The wizard was unable to detect any Plug and Play printer. To install the printer manually, click Next.'
  5. Click Next. The Select a Printer Port screen displays.
  6. Select Local Printer attached to this computer and uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Select Use the following port and then choose FILE: (Print to File) from the drop-down menu.
  9. Click Next.
  10. Select a PostScript printer such as the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS.
  11. Click Next. The Name Your Printer screen displays.
  12. Enter a name for the printer and select Yes under Do you want to use this printer as the default printer?
  13. Click Next. The Printer Sharing screen displays.
  14. Select Do not share this printer.
  15. Click Next. The Print Test Page screen displays.
  16. Select No under Do you want to print a test page.
  17. Click Next, and then click Finish.
