On some operating systems it is necessary to have an active PostScript printer installed in order to render a PDF in QuarkXPress Server.
Add a 'virtual' printer' so that QuarkXPress Server sees that a PostScript device is installed:
To install a virtual printer on Windows Vista:
- Choose Start > Control Panel.
- Double-click the Printers icon.
- Choose Add Printer icon from the File menu. The Add Printer Wizard window displays.
- Select Add a Local Printer option.
- Click Next.
- Select the option Use existing port and then choose FILE: (Print to File) from the drop-down menu.
- Click Next.
- Select a PostScript printer such as the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS.
- Click Next.
- Select the option Use the driver that is currently installed (recommended).
- Click Next.
- The Type a Printer name screen displays.
- Enter a name for the printer and check the checkbox for Set as the default printer.
- Click Next.
- The Print Test Page screen displays.
- Ignore Print a test page and click Finish.
To Install a virtual printer on Windows 2000 and Windows XP:
- Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel.
- Double-click the Printers and Faxes icon.
- Double-click the Add Printer icon. The Add Printer Wizard window displays.
- Click Next. The following message displays: 'The wizard was unable to detect any Plug and Play printer. To install the printer manually, click Next.'
- Click Next. The Select a Printer Port screen displays.
- Select Local Printer attached to this computer and uncheck Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer.
- Click Next.
- Select Use the following port and then choose FILE: (Print to File) from the drop-down menu.
- Click Next.
- Select a PostScript printer such as the HP Color LaserJet 8500 PS.
- Click Next. The Name Your Printer screen displays.
- Enter a name for the printer and select Yes under Do you want to use this printer as the default printer?
- Click Next. The Printer Sharing screen displays.
- Select Do not share this printer.
- Click Next. The Print Test Page screen displays.
- Select No under Do you want to print a test page.
- Click Next, and then click Finish.
