After installation of the QLA Server Software, you are taken to the Account Setup Page on the Quark QLA Web Server. The information you input on this page provides part of the configuration information for your license file. Following is a description of each field and what you do and dont need to enter for each field.
Note: If you don't already have a QLA Account, click on the New Account link available on the top right side of the page.
User Name And Password (If you already have a QLA web account):
These are used to log into the QLA Web Server to access your QLA Web Account and make changes to your QLA license file configuration. These can be, but do not have to be, the same as the User Name and Password you entered when installing the QLA Server.
- Customer Number: You need to enter your customer number in the field provided. You can find your customer number in the email/PDF file containing your license information that you would have received from Quark.
Accounts Payable Email:
This field was put into the Account Setup page to accommodate online invoicing for Auxiliary Licenses. If you do not want to use this feature, you can enter any valid Email address into this field.
System Administrator Email:
This is the Email address to which all communications from the QLA Web Server at Quark will be sent. If you ever change the primary site administrator for your QuarkXPress licenses, this value should be updated.
This can be set either as a DNS name or as an IP address. Generally speaking, it is better to use the IP address if the machine on which the QLA Server is installed has been assigned a static IP address. If you are running in a DHCP network environment, you will need to enter the DNS name. Also, per the note on the Account Setup page, it is usually better practice to enter the static IP address if your QLA Server is running on a Mac station.
Server Port Number:
This is used to identify the application service in your network. It can be any value you set between 1024 and 65535. This is the port number that will be used by QuarkXPress and the QLA Client Control Panel for requesting a license.
Technical Note: If you are also entering information for a Backup Server, choose a port number for the Backup Server that is different from the port number for the Primary Server. This will allow for faster communication between the Primary server and Backup Server. Also, if you will be running the QLA Server on an XServe, do not use port 7000, because that port is used already by the XServe for some of its own services.
Server Host ID:
This is the 12-character Ethernet card address of the server machine. This value allows the QLA Server to self-validate during launch. Depending on the kind of machine on which you are installing the QLA Server, the values you want to enter may or may not be the ones that the QLA Server application will detect first. If you are installing on a Windows machine that has multiple Ethernet cards, you will usually want to enter the Ethernet address for the card that is in or closest to Slot 0. On the Macintosh side, the QLA Server will normally detect the onboard Ethernet address first. However, if you are also running an Airport card, the QLA Server application may detect it before any other Ethernet card or the onboard Ethernet. If you want to run the QLA Server in a FireWire network, QLA 4.5 will also allow you to enter FireWire address information into this field.
Troubleshooting Note: If you launch the QLA Server after having loaded the license file correctly into the Server folder and the application generates the following error, The License File is missing or invalid, it can mean ONLY ONE THING: the Ethernet address you entered is incorrect. You can check the Ethernet address on the Windows side by opening the Prompt window and typing in ipconfig /all. On the Mac side, you can find all Ethernet addresses either through the Apple System Profiler or through the Network Utility application.
Backup Server Information (Optional):
If you intend to run a Backup Server, enter the Backup Server Name, Port Number, and Host ID into their respective fields. The proper procedure for installing and running with a Backup Server is:
- Install the Primary QLA Server, go to the Account Setup/Account Information page.
- Enter/verify all Primary and Backup Server information, click Submit, and then download the license file.
- Drop the license file into the Server folder and launch the Primary Server.
- Install the Backup Server on the machine you have designated as your Backup Server.
Load the license file you have already downloaded into the Backup Servers Server folder. Launch the Backup Server.
IMPORTANT: Running the QLA Primary and Backup Servers as a Service when you install the QLA Server and initialize it the first time, resources are placed in the system that will allow the system to initialize the QLA Server as a Service on startup. If you restart your server machine, the service will automatically initialize so that you dont need to be logged on for the QLA Service to run. One mistake operators often make is to restart the machine, log in, and attempt to launch the QLA Server application manually. If you try to do this, you will receive the error, Port number is in use. This is because the port number is actually in use by the service. Therefore, at the point of installation, you need to determine whether you want to run the QLA Server as a service or as an application.
License File Location (This field is not available when setting up new QLA Web Account):
If you want to synchronize your existing license file to the new license file you will be downloading, click on Browse. The only reason you would want to do this is if you have set up any pools of reserved users through the QLA Client. If you are not using this feature, you can ignore this field.
Product Serial Numbers:
When you enter your serial number information, the platform prefix (i.e., XU or WX) must be upper case. Add one serial number per line.
